A Memorial Marker for Dan Leavell has been placed in the Meditative Garden beside many of his rocks that were donated by his wife, Sarah Leavell.

Daniel “Dan” Leavell, Ph.D., was a Geology professor who taught at the Newark campus of the Ohio State University for many years.

He graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in mechanical engineering. In his graduate work, he shifted to a concentration on Earth Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where he earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology. He began work in academia, accepting jobs at Smith College and in the Geology Department at Denison University. He transferred his scientific and research skills to positions in government and industry, including working for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and Owens Corning Science and Technology Center in Granville. His love of teaching, at last, drew him back to accept a position at The Ohio State University in the Earth Sciences Department. He retired from OSU as Professor Emeritus in 2015.

Dan passed away in June of 2017 and is survived by his wife, Sarah; daughters, Kate Hoben, Maria Leavell, and Becca Leavell. All members of St. Luke’s for many years.
