Run For The Seniors
Last week I mentioned the need for food amongst families in our community, families, in particular, with children. On the flip side of that there is a forgotten group of people who depend on the pantry, senior citizens. In the past year the Licking County Food Pantry Network has seen the need for food increase by 26.57% by senior households.
Senior hunger affects millions of older adults and often limits their ability to work (if needed), carry out daily activities, and live independently. Often food insecurity among the elderly leads to experiencing negative mental and physical health conditions and outcomes, such as diabetes, fair or poor health status, depression, lower cognitive function, limitations in activities of daily living, hypertension, congestive heart failure, peripheral arterial disease, history of a heart attack, osteoporosis, gum disease, and asthma according to the Food Research & Action Center.
The money raised by the Granville Turkey Trot through corporate sponsorships and participation of community members helps to combat the issue of food insecurity amongst the elderly within our county.
Help us this year as we continue the mission of the Turkey Trot to give 100% of the proceeds to the Licking County Food Pantry Network. Sign up, volunteer, share our social media posts, spread the word: give.
