It is St. Luke’s great honor and pleasure to announce that William ‘Bill’ Hanes was nominated to be inducted into the Society of St. Simeon and St. Anna Class of 2023. Bill will be inducted into the Society on May 17, at the Proctor Center.
The 1980’s found him at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Westerville, OH, where he continued serving and training acolytes (most notable among his charges: Vicki Zust, now Rector at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Upper Arlington, OH. -he says he, in good faith, cannot take credit for that!)
Having moved to Granville in the 1980’s, he continued serving and training/ recruiting acolytes at St. Luke’s Church until his retirement in 2022. He was most proud of counting his daughter and granddaughter among charges.
From grade four, children were eligible to be a part of his Worship ministry and at its peak, the acolyte corps numbered thirty. Being Acolyte Warden also assured him a seat at the table for Worship Committee meetings and a voice in service planning.
He retired as an Architect in 2017 – his wife Marsha said he couldn’t retire until he had something to do, so he was recruited by one of St. Luke’s Market Street Pantry mangers. He has been there, serving every week. He has been a long-time hands-on supporter of feeding ministries...serving for Faith Mission dinners, St. Vincent Haven dinners, and New Beginnings domestic violence shelter dinners.
He is a tireless volunteer for the Market Street Pantry, traveling to pick up food 3 days a week, volunteering at the pantry during open days/ hours (Wednesday & Saturday 8:00 am – 12:00 pm). He drives to a nearby egg farm and picks up 120 dozen eggs for the pantry at least once a month.
Bill’s compassion for feeding the hungry and being a role model in the church is a true testament to his faithfulness to the gospel of Christ Jesus.
A huge thank you to his wife Marsha who helped draft his accomplishments!
